TIPS TO MAKE YOUR COURSE HAPPY & HEALTHY
Small Things Make a Big Difference - From Rick Maranto - Head Golf Course Superintendent
• Pick up broken tees on the tee box. This helps to eliminate the possibility of a tee getting stuck in a mowers cutting unit and either damaging the mower or the tee surface as it drags across the grass.
• Avoid taking divots on practice swings. When a divot is taken, don’t overfill the divot. Overfilling a divot creates mower problems for the equipment technician as he knows he has to spend time regrinding the mower that will no longer cut with the same precision. Remember sand is very abrasive as it contacts mettle and as the real spins sand wears the surfaces faster creating down time for that mowing unit and increased labor cost for the repair.
• Lose the heard mentality. Cart traffic is one of the Superintendants biggest nightmares, traffic patterns wear the turf down and create thin bare spots on the course. These spots will have to be corrected by seeding or re-sodding to regain a maintained look and playability. If you notice that a spot is worn, please drive in a different area to reduce the traffic.
• Cart parking. Please keep four wheels on the cart path. Generally, the maintenance department is trying to grow grass on aggregate material laid down as base for the cart path surface. It is very difficult to grow grass in these areas since they require very special attention, labor and money. Reducing the wear can go a long way to help preserve these areas giving the course a better overall appearance. If passing a stopped cart is necessary, please pass on the non playing side of the path.
• Bunker care. Please rake bunkers after use for the players playing behind you. Players should not have to play from foot traffic created by another golfer. This is golfer etiquette that should be extended to all who play. Entering a bunker is not thought about much but could have
